Feel better with birds

Birds are engaging, entertaining and highly visible across our towns and cities. From the large, gregarious, and social parrots through to soaring birds of prey or delicate and busy fairywrens, pardalotes and finches, there is always an opportunity to see, or hear a bird. We can now all access the health-giving attributes that birds provide. They in return, can benefit from the actions we take!

BirdLife Australia and NatureFix are excited to be working alongside Bayside Council to transform Bardwell Valley Parklands green (& blue) spaces into wellness places; making them even better with birds.

Bayside Council invites you to take time out to bond with birds at Bardwell Valley Parklands

As our very first Better with Birds Nature Wellness Trail, this ten-station walk offers park visitors a unique opportunity to enjoy meaningful moments in nature whilst boosting their bond with birds. With such a variety of birds across the Parklands, this trail delightfully invites individuals to learn about the language of birds, explore the building blocks of bird baths and quietly watch small birds take centre stage as they perch, play and perform in front of you.

“I’ve had a fascination and have worked with birds for over 20 years. I often take time to just sit and watch birds and reflect on the amount of joy that they bring, and invite you to do the same. The Better with Bird Nature Wellness trail is a guided experience that takes you through the wonderful life of birds… this trail is not about learning about birds, this is about fostering a deep connection with birds.”

Dr Holly Parsons, BirdLife Australia

Why is bonding with birds so special?

Research has found that people enjoy having unexpected ‘non-human’ encounters, especially with birds and butterflies. Individuals feel happier in sites where there is a greater variety of birds, and in locations where everyday encounters with birdlife can occur. Research into birdsong and the diversity of song modality also suggests that birdsong diversity has an important restorative effect leading to significant improvements in mental health.
