The benefits of nature connection

It's important to note that the degree of nature connection and its benefits can vary from person to person. Some individuals may find solace in solitary nature experiences, while others may thrive in group activities or community efforts related to the environment. Overall, nurturing a meaningful connection with nature has a positive impact on both personal well-being and broader environmental consciousness. However, in order to access these benefits , it needs to be more than a walk in the park.

We like to think of it like going to a gym…

There’s an assumption that, when we go to the gym, we are not just touching a treadmill, glancing at the exercise bike or walking by the weights.  ‘Going to the gym’ implies that some kind of routine will be followed to optimise health objectives. A personal trainer might be needed to tailor a program to suit our individual needs and available time to maximise outcomes.  So going to the gym and having accessible gym equipment is only half the story.

The same can be said for ‘going into nature’:  safe, accessible and appealing green space is vital (and, unlike a gym, it does provide many passive incidental benefits) but what we do in nature – our intentional engagement - is even more important in realising health benefits. Nowadays, people actually need prompts and guidance on how to effectively engage and interact to help channel focus (away from unhelpful distraction) and to more purposefully direct their attention when in those spaces.

So, as we like to say it’s not just the contact with nature but the nature of the contact that also counts. Where the meaningful moments with nature in some respects matters more than minutes with nature. Where we have designed a series of nature conneciton routines that we match to different types of nature that unlock their benefits across physical and psychological health. Our NatureFix routines foster a connection with nature that lead to numerous positive outcomes, including:

  •  Stress Reduction: Spending time in nature has been proven to reduce stress levels and promote relaxation. Natural environments provide a break from the demands and pressures of daily life, allowing individuals to unwind and rejuvenate.

  • Improved Mental Health: Nature connection has been associated with lower rates of anxiety, and depression. Interacting with natural settings can enhance mood, increase self-esteem, and contribute to a more positive outlook on life.

  • Enhanced Creativity and Cognitive Function: Connection to nature can stimulate creativity and boost cognitive function. Natural landscapes can inspire novel thoughts and problem-solving approaches.

  • Presence and Beauty: Nature's tranquillity and beauty can facilitate mindfulness and present-moment awareness, promoting a greater sense of grounding and peace.

  • Connection to Something Bigger: Many people report a sense of awe and transcendence when in the presence of nature. This connection to something greater than oneself can provide a sense of purpose and meaning.

  • Social Benefits: Engaging in nature-based activities can provide opportunities for social interaction and community building, fostering connections with others who share similar interests. Connection with nature also provides a greater sense of connection and bellowing with place.

  • Environmental Awareness and Advocacy: A strong connection to nature often leads to greater awareness of environmental issues, encouraging individuals to become advocates for conservation and sustainable practices. With some research suggesting that fostering a stronger sense of connection with nature results in people being almost twice as likely to engage in conservation behaviours.

  • Increased Physical Activity: Engaging with the outdoors using NatureFix involves physical activities like walking, which contribute to improved physical fitness and overall well-being.

  • Immune System Support: Exposure to natural elements and fresh air can support a stronger immune system, potentially reducing the risk of certain illnesses.
