Nature Prescriptions: Great in Theory, Tough in Practice?
Nature-based therapies are gaining widespread recognition for their ability to support mental, emotional, and even physical wellbeing. Yet for many clinicians and health managers, implementing these interventions in real-world settings isn’t as simple as it sounds.
A recent study by Kondo et al. (2025), published in Health and Social Care in the Community, confirms what many in health services already experience: although nature prescriptions are promising, barriers like weather, time, access, and systemic buy-in can prevent them from being adopted effectively.
At NatureFix, we’re looking at ways to turn these common roadblocks into launchpads - designing programs that are evidence-led, inclusive, and practical for care providers, clients, individuals and patients. Key identified barriers that NatureFix helps to overcome include:
1. Weather-Proof Access to Nature
Weather is one of the most common barriers to outdoor nature connection, but it doesn’t have to be.
At NatureFix, we design for all seasons and all settings, ensuring that the benefits of nature are available - rain, hail, or shine. Our programs include:
Indoor nature-noticing practices, like observing natural light, trees through a window, or shifting weather patterns
Screen-based immersions, using guided activities with nature imagery and soundscapes to evoke calming, sensory experiences
Mindful rituals with indoor plants, natural objects, or textures that bring the outside in
We also encourage seasonal preparedness, encouraging individuals to use suitable outdoor clothing, so nature connection remains comfortable and safe even in less-than-ideal conditions.
For those who can’t leave their room, we offer bedside solutions tailored to palliative, inpatient, and aged care settings, ensuring that people in vulnerable situations still experience nature’s grounding and restorative effects.
Why not try one of our virtual nature connection activities called Feel the Flow… best experienced using headphones in a comfortable location, please enjoy!
2. Time - Made for Busy Lives
We get it - life is full. Whether you're a clinician, carer, or simply juggling a hectic schedule, it can feel impossible to carve out time for wellbeing. That’s why NatureFix is designed to work with your day, not against it.
Short, evidence-based nature practices (just 2–10 minutes)
Prompts for lunch breaks, or commutes, or even better, build it into workplace practice
Guided programs that turn quick pauses into lasting habits
These micro-interventions don’t just help you feel calmer in the moment, they build your capacity to self-regulate, recharge, and recover from stress throughout the day.
3. Accessible for All Abilities and Locations
Getting to nature shouldn’t be a privilege. NatureFix brings nature to people, wherever they are. We deliver:
At-home programs for people living with disability, in aged care, or in temporary housing
Online and hybrid options for those who cannot access green spaces
Partnerships promoting urban greening and biophilic design in healthcare and community settings
We believe everyone deserves a connection to nature, regardless of mobility, geography, or circumstances.
4. Affordable and Scalable
Cost shouldn't be a barrier to wellbeing. NatureFix offers tiered pricing models and lifetime access options to ensure equity and long-term use. We're also collaborating with green space managers and health authorities to make sure the health benefits of nature is accessible to those that need it most. Positioning NatureFix as a scalable, cost-effective mental health solution.
5. Built for Health Systems
NatureFix is already integrated into clinical trials, training programs, and frontline services. We’re currently working with universities, Government health services, education, primary and mental health teams across Australia and beyond.
Our professional toolkits, referral pathways, and trauma-informed frameworks are designed to fit seamlessly into existing models of care, from GP consultations to community wellbeing programs.
